Have you ever dined with a group of loud and obnoxious people? Or maybe the restaurant got your order wrong, or your server didn’t quite meet your needs.
Well, I have been on both sides of the table, as a server and a diner, and there is a lot to be said about restaurant etiquette.
Proper dining etiquette holds the power to make a lasting and positive impact on those around you. When you exhibit respectful manners at the table, it sets a tone of sophistication, courtesy, and thoughtfulness.
To create a lasting impact, please consider the following tips, some of which may surprise you:
1. Make a Reservation:
To ensure a smooth dining experience, it’s always a good idea to make a reservation, especially during peak hours. This not only guarantees you a table but also helps the restaurant manage its seating arrangements more efficiently.
Please keep in mind that even if some tables appear to be empty, they may not be available for use due to various reasons, such as staff availability or maintenance.
2. Be Punctual:
Be respectful of your reservation time or the estimated waiting period. Being on time sets the tone for a positive experience and shows consideration for the staff and other patrons.
It’s important to understand that restaurants prioritize revenue over holding tables for no-shows. So, if you’re late and lose your reservation, try not to take it personally. It’s just business.
3. Tip Appropriately:
Tipping is a matter of personal preference, but it’s essential to recognize the effort that restaurant staff puts in.
Workers are often not paid a full salary or even the minimum wage, as they rely heavily on tips to make ends meet. Your server may be earning as little as $2.50 per hour, so it’s necessary to show your appreciation for their hard work by tipping accordingly. This is something to keep in mind when you dine out.
A standard tip is typically between 15-20% of the total bill, but it’s important to adjust it based on the quality of service you receive.
4. Dress Accordingly:
Always make sure to dress your best! I know this may sound like a rant, but please save the pajamas or sweats for bed. It’s not only inappropriate, but it also shows a lack of respect for the establishment. It’s important to choose an outfit that matches the restaurant’s ambiance and makes you look presentable.
Taking the time to look your best and having pride in your appearance is crucial, and it’s a lesson that I will pass on to my daughter when she grows up.
5. Handle Issues Gracefully:
It’s frustrating to go to a restaurant with someone inconsiderate when a problem arises. The idea of them upsetting the staff and potentially doing something harmful to our food terrifies me.
After all, we are human and make mistakes. Not to mention, restaurant staff are often overworked.
If issues arise with your meal or service, address them politely. Notify the server or manager discreetly to maintain a positive atmosphere. Oftentimes they will compensate for the mistake.
6. Respectful Interaction with Staff:
Treat the restaurant staff with courtesy. A simple “please” and “thank you” can go a long way in creating a positive atmosphere. Acknowledge the hard work of the kitchen and waitstaff. Make someone’s day!😊
7. Menu Familiarity:
Take a few moments to review the menu before ordering. This helps expedite the process, especially if you’re dining with a group.
8. Communicate Dietary Needs:
Communicate any dietary restrictions or allergies when ordering. This ensures a smooth dining experience and allows the kitchen to cater to your needs.
9. Proper Utensil Use:
Use utensils correctly, starting from the outermost ones and working your way in as the courses progress. When you finish eating, neatly place your utensils on the plate to signal the server to clear the table.
10. Chew with Decorum:
Practice good table manners by chewing with your mouth closed. Avoid talking with your mouth full to maintain a pleasant dining atmosphere.
11. Wait for Everyone to Be Served:
It’s always considerate to wait until everyone at the table has been served before starting your meal in a group. Although it may not be necessary when dining with close friends or a small group, it is the typical behavior to show respect to your fellow diners. Remember to be courteous and mindful of others while sharing a meal together.
12. Mindful Phone Use:
This is another pet peeve of mine because it’s just rude. Keep your phone on silent and limit its use during meals, especially in upscale or fine dining establishments. Be present and in the moment while dining out.
13. Consider Noise Levels:
Be mindful of the noise level in the restaurant. Keep your conversation at a comfortable volume, especially in crowded settings. Don’t be “that guy.”
14. Table Manners Matter:
Adhere to basic table manners, using napkins appropriately, avoiding loud slurping, and refraining from reaching across the table. And need I mention the dog?🤪
15. Express Gratitude:
Before leaving, express gratitude to the staff. A simple “thank you” goes a long way in acknowledging their efforts and leaving a positive impression.
By embodying proper dining etiquette, you create an atmosphere of elegance and respect, making every meal an unforgettable encounter for all involved.
